Choosing the right CMS for your website

Date: 01 August 2025

Re-platforming your website often starts with the question: which content management system (CMS) should we use?

Two of the most popular options are WordPress and Umbraco. Both are open-source, widely used, and capable of powering professional websites — but they’re built for very different purposes.

At HTDL, we regularly help clients decide which platform is right for their business. Here’s our breakdown.

What is WordPress?

WordPress launched in 2003 as a blogging tool before growing into the most widely used CMS in the world. Written in PHP, it has a huge ecosystem of themes and plugins, making it easy for anyone to build a website with little or no coding knowledge.

What is Umbraco?

Umbraco was released in 2004 as a dedicated CMS, built on Microsoft’s .NET framework. Unlike WordPress, it was designed from day one for flexibility, scalability, and security. Umbraco delivers enterprise-level functionality without the expensive licensing fees associated with proprietary platforms.

WordPress: Pros and Cons

Advantages of WordPress

  • Beginner-friendly: Easy to set up and manage, even with limited technical knowledge.

  • Plugin marketplace: Over 58,000 plugins (plus premium options) make adding features simple.

  • SEO support: Popular plugins such as Yoast SEO give site owners control over on-page optimisation.

Disadvantages of WordPress

  • Security issues: Its popularity makes it the most frequently hacked CMS worldwide.

  • Not ideal for complex sites: WordPress was not originally built as a CMS, so enterprise-level functionality often feels “bolted on.”

  • Performance concerns: Many themes are code-heavy, which can slow websites down.

  • Updates can break functionality: Core and plugin updates are essential but can cause compatibility problems.

Umbraco: Pros and Cons

Advantages of Umbraco

  • Trusted by major brands: Used by organisations including Barclays, Carlsberg, and Microsoft.

  • Simple user interface: Minimal, but powerful, the back-end is a breeze to update.

  • Built for scalability: Handles large, complex, and high-traffic websites with ease.

  • Secure and reliable: Built on Microsoft’s .NET framework, with regular penetration testing.

  • Unlimited customisation: No restrictions on workflows, integrations, or data structures.

Disadvantages of Umbraco

  • Developer-focused: Slightly more technical to set up compared to WordPress.

The WordPress legal battle you may have missed

The WordPress ecosystem recently faced controversy when co-founder Matt Mullenweg (CEO of Automattic) clashed with WP Engine. The dispute centred on contributions to the open-source project and the use of the “WP” brand. WP Engine responded with legal action, accusing Automattic of unfair practices.

This has raised questions about governance, leadership, and the future direction of WordPress.

Which CMS should you choose?

The right CMS depends on your business goals:

  • WordPress is a solid choice for simple brochure websites or blogs where speed of setup matters.

  • Umbraco is the stronger option for businesses needing a secure, scalable, and fully customisable platform. It’s built to handle complex functionality and high-traffic demands.

For any organisation that sees its website as a serious business tool, Umbraco is the recommended choice.
